Filled With Useful Info That Travelers Use To Plan Their South America Tour

Stressed out about planning a wedding and choosing the perfect honeymoon destination? Fear no more, we have the honeymoon covered. South America has some of the most romantic destinations in the world, ideal for those seeking a unique honeymoon different from the typical resort getaway.  Here are my six favorite honeymoon destinations in South America and all the insider details you’ll want to know before booking your trip.

#1. Culture, romance and pristine beaches only 5 hours from New York: Cartagena and Mucura Island

Cartagena - Honeymoon destinations in South America

With direct flights from JFK, Cartagena is an easy destination for those traveling from the East Coast! The old city of Cartagena is one of the most beautiful and well-preserved cities in South America. I often say that walking through its streets is like opening a book by Gabriel Garcia Marques (Nobel Price of Literature), rewind 500 years in the past. The colorful houses, bougainvillea in bloom and cobblestone streets offer a peaceful break from the usual routine. For foodies, try the Colombian specialty: rice cooked in coconut with fried fish and plantain. If you are adventurous enough, you can even take a cooking class!

Travel Tip: Add an excursion to Punta Faro Hotel on Mucura Island. This Hotel is 2 hours from Cartagena by boat, far from the effervescence of the world. Unlike some other islands, this all-inclusive boutique hotel will treat you and your loved one like royalty.

If time permits, add Medellin, Guatape, the Coffee region and the Cocora Valley for a complete Colombia experience.

#2. Discover paradise in Lencois Maranhenses

Lencois - Honeymoon destinations in South America
This is the trip to take if you are looking for some relaxing beach time without the crowds of a popular beach or a typical resort. The beaches on the north-eastern coast of Brazil are pure bliss and an absolute paradise. From the fishing village of Jericoacoara with its hammocks swaying in the sea, to the National Park Lencois Maranhenses with its lagoons nestled in between the dunes. You simply cannot go wrong in Lencois Maranhenses.

Why we love it? If paradise exists, it is here.  Lencois Maranhenses is the perfect destination for a romantic honeymoon.

Best time to visit: between July and September, right after the rainy season when the blue lagoons are full.

#3. Culture, wine and wildlife? Buenos Aires, Iguazu Falls and Ibera wetlands.

Buenos Aires - Honeymoon destinations in South America

Buenos Aires is full of cobblestone streets with European architecture, historical museums, one of the best opera theaters in the world, BBQ and delicious Malbec wine. Watch couples dance the Tango or join in the fun on a Sunday afternoon in San Telmo. This city of romance and passion is the perfect starting point for your honeymoon tour.

After a few days in the “Little Paris of South America,” take a short flight to Ibera wetlands, in the Northern part of the Argentina, around 350 kilometers from Iguazu Falls. Enjoy the nature filled wetlands now because, in a few years, this hidden spot will be a nature lovers hotspot teeming with tourists. The Ibera Wetlands is the perfect destination to see wildlife and feel the rhythm of nature.

Travel Tip: Stay in Hotel Puerto Valle, a boutique Hotel in the wetlands offers 5-Star service and is the perfect place for birding. In Iguazu, stay in the National Park at the Sheraton. You will hear (and see) the Falls from the gardens!

More time to spend: What about Mendoza? Spend a few days relaxing in a vineyard at the base of the Andes. Mendoza is the perfect location for a honeymoon; relax and enjoy the outdoors with a glass of Malbec wine.

# 4. Seeking an adventure far from civilization? Go on an Amazon Cruise.

Tucano cruise - Honeymoon destinations in South America

Manaus, Brazil has direct flights from Miami, making it the perfect gateway to the Amazon. The Tucano Cruise is a fantastic option for travel through the Amazon.

Why do we love the Tucano Cruise? The boat is small and intimate with only nine cabins and holds up to 18 passengers.  Enjoy daily shore excursions with a local guide in search of wildlife and return to the air conditioning vessel in the evening – not all Amazon cruises offer air conditioning. Choose between a 4-night or 6-night cruise traveling along the Rio Negro.

More time to spend? Brazil is a vast country and filled with different types of destinations. Check out Salvador da Bahia and Chapada Diamantina as other options.

For an upscale luxury cruise, consider the Anakonda Cruise in Ecuador.  This luxury cruise combines adventure and comfort. With two departure dates per week and cruises ranging from 3, 4 or 7 nights, seamlessly combine this with a land tour for a complete and comprehensive honeymoon amazon tour.

#5. For the couples that love seeing new cultures: Lima, Cuzco and Machu Picchu.

Sacred Valley - Honeymoon destinations in South America
When people think of Peru, they tend to only think of Machu Picchu, which is such a shame because Peru has so much more to offer visitors! Machu Picchu is incredible, but we can’t dismiss the picturesque colonial town of Cuzco or the Sacred Valley.  The Sacred Valley offers many hotels located in restored ancient mansions. My favorites include Sonesta Posadas del Inca, which is the most charming Hotel in the Valley (3-Star), Aranwa, or Hotel Sol y Luna. If you and your loved one would like to do a multi-day trek, I recommend Explora; this is a new 5-Star hotel that offers an all-inclusive program in the Sacred Valley, perfect for honeymooners.

Besides being one of the oldest cities of the Incan Empire, Lima is known today as the #1 destination in South America for foodies.  I recommend staying in Miraflores or the bohemian neighborhood of Barranco.  Participate in the culinary tour, which is an exciting mix of food and culture (and super fun).

#6. For the adventurous couple? Patagonia!

Mount Fitz Roy - Honeymoon destinations in South America

Patagonia, the located in the southern part of Chile and Argentina and is paradise for the adventurous couple. Choose between hiking, kayaking, horseback riding or even fishing! The Australis Cruise is a romantic way to explore Patagonia! Starting in the southernmost city in the world Ushuaia, and traveling through Cape Horn, El Calafate, and to the majestic Torres del Paine National Park. As you cruise through the piercing blue waters, grab your loved one and admire the beauty that is Patagonia.

If you have seen Chef’s Table episode featuring the Argentine Chef Francis Mallmann, you have already noticed that Patagonia is the land of wild territories. There are plenty of remote Hotels with a 5-Star service for a Honeymooners. Ask us for some recommendations.

More time? Add the Lakes Region in Chile with Puerto Varas and Huilo Huilo reserve. Puerto Varas is a picturesque town with a strong German influence. At the shore of the Llanquihue Lake are fantastic views of the volcanoes and mountains. Among the many activities to do there, you might spot the Pudu, a typical Chilean animal and the smallest deer in the World!

Some of her favorite places include: the lake region in Chile, northern Peru and the hidden treasures such as Chavin, Chan Chan and/or Kuelap, hiking in La Cordillera Blanca in Huaraz and seeing the sunrise in the middle of the valley surrounded by mountains. Colombia has wonderful food and the happiness of its people. Brazil for its mix of culture and its music, forro, bossa nova and samba.
