Colombia is still one of those hidden gems in South America waiting to be explored, making it a unique and authentic destination. Located in the northern part of South America, Colombia is also part of the Caribbean, which also makes it a must-see destination for beach lovers. Here is a list of Colombia Destinations that should be on every traveler’s bucket list.
#1. Bogota – Colombia Destinations
Besides being the capital of the country, Bogota is one of the most cosmopolitan cities in South America. The gastronomical city is by far one of the best in South America, from restaurants with excellent Colombian food to international cuisine. While in the city, a visit to the historical area is a must. The historical area is conveniently located downtown and is home to several famous museums. From downtown, you can take a trip to the Monserrate hill by cable car where you can enjoy a beautiful panoramic view of the city. Bogota is also a great place to start your journey in Colombia, as it has more flight routes in the country, it is quite easy to take a direct flight from the US or Europe.
#2. Villa de Leyva – Colombia Destinations
A short trip from Bogota is Villa de Leyva, a charming and welcoming colonial town. Have a walk along the cobblestone streets and white houses and spend the night in a lovely posada. Our Bogota Tours are perfect for those who want to explore Colombia’s Capital and surrounding regions.
#3. Medellin – Colombia Destinations
Medellin is one of the most important cities in the country. It is the fun and outgoing sister of Bogota. Once you visit Medellin, you will quickly notice how friendly and welcoming the people are. The locals are always up for a good time, so this is a destination I would recommend for the younger folks looking for some fun nightlife. The city of Medellin has one domestic airport and one for international flights, making it easy to combine with your Colombian tour.
#4. Laguna de Guatape – Colombia Destinations
Located about 90 km from Medellin you will find the colorful town of Guatape. While there climb El Penon de Guatape peak, a massive rock formation sitting 2135 meters above sea level. If you are feeling up to it, climb 649 steps to the top for a spectacular 360-degree view.
#5. Coffee Region – Colombia Destinations
Located in the west region of the country is the famous Colombian Coffee Region. Here you will enjoy the best cup of coffee in the world. The area is surrounded by coffee plantations and “haciendas” where you can take day trips to learn about the coffee-making process. Not only will you enjoy fabulous coffee, but you will also enjoy spectacular landscapes.
#6. Cocora Valley – Colombia Destinations
The Cocora Valley is located in the Colombian Coffee Region. Here you will find beautiful rolling hills filled with the national Colombian wax palm trees. These are the tallest palm trees in the world and can reach up to 60 meters (200 ft) high. Fly directly from Bogota into either Pereira or Manizales to add the coffee region to your Colombia adventure. Our recommendation would be to stay in one of the typical haciendas outside of the city. Check out our Colombia Coffee Region Tours for more ideas!
#7. Cartagena – Colombia Destinations
A trip to Colombia wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the romantic and mesmerizing city of Cartagena de Indias. Located in the Caribbean, the city is one of the most well-known destinations in the country. Cartagena is divided into two main districts: the walled city (ciudad amurallada) historic district and the modern district. Both are different from each other, so you get the best of both worlds. Go on a city tour through this UNESCO city to see all that Cartagena has to offer.
#8. Islas del Rosario – Colombia Destinations
From Cartagena, easily combine a visit to Islas del Rosario where you can relax on the beach and swim in the Caribbean waters. The Rosario Islands are about an hour outside of the historic city of Cartagena. Spend the day snorkeling in the turquoise colored water to spot marine life and spectacular coral reef. Finish your day with a trip to the Oceanario Aquarium where you can enjoy a dolphin show.
