Insider’s Guide to Rio Carnival
Read our insider’s guide on Rio Carnival to prepare for the upcoming Rio Carnival celebration each February.
There is a reason why Carnival in Rio de Janeiro is famous worldwide. This raucous parade is set in the beautiful landscape of Rio de Janeiro with its mountainous green peaks and beautiful blue ocean. Plus, the liveliness of the Brazilian people, called cariocas in Rio de Janeiro, comes out in full force during Rio Carnival. Naturally happy and easy-going, the cariocas take to the streets during Carnival week, singing, dancing, and merry-making in block parties, or “blocos,” throughout the city.
But the central event during Rio Carnival is the samba parade in the Sambadromo. The Carnival parade consists of 6 samba schools performing each night, parading through the Sambadrome in elaborate, bright, and colorful costumes. Each school puts on their best show and does their best dancing in order to win the title and perform in Rio de Janeiro’s Carnival Winner’s Parade. Each year, more than 85,000 people crowd into the Sambadromo each night to witness the Carnival parade. Over the Carnival week, over $2 billion is gained in revenue. It’s a huge event, perhaps the World’s Greatest Party.
To experience Rio Carnival 2013 as a local, make sure to book your Rio hotel accommodations early since hotel bookings often fill up a year in advance. Then grab a map and schedule of the blocos at your Rio hotel or at many of the local bars, and hit the town during Carnival week. Make sure to also get a ticket to see the Sambadromo Parade well in advance – our SouthAmerica.travel travel consultants are happy to include the tickets to the parade in your Rio Carnival 2013 package.
This year Rio Carnival 2013 takes place between February 8 and February 13th. February is an excellent time to go, as it is summer in Brazil. What a better time to work on your tan during the day and partake in the Rio Carnival 2013 festivities by night!
