When you think of where to see wildlife in South America, do you think of the Amazon Rainforest? Think again. There is actually a region south of the Amazon Rainforest where the chances of spotting birds, caiman, otters, monkeys, and all sorts of wildlife are much more in your favor.
It’s the Brazilian Pantanal wetlands. The Pantanal is a huge open plain the size of Texas, and offers incredible Pantanal Brazil tours to see wildlife including thousands of species of birds and fish, monkeys, jaguars, tapirs, and iguanas. You can also go piranha fishing, hiking, horseback riding, or look for alligators at nighttime when their eyes light up whenever a flashlight is shined on them.
All this is possible because the plain floods once a year just long enough to keep most vegetation out and our view of the animal kingdom clear. In the Amazon Rainforest, however, the jungle is so thick that it is often difficult to spot wildlife.
All these Pantanal Brazil tours are based around lodges in the wilderness and some of these tours even use two or three lodges. These wilderness lodges mean that you will have the opportunity to see the most variety of wildlife, from the unusual jaibu birds to the abundance of caiman.
The best Pantanal Brazil tours do include at least one or two lodges in the Pantanal proper, one lodge in the Chapada dos Guimarães mountains just north of the Pantanal, and finally an excursion to Nobres. Nobres is a very convenient stop to see what is offered as well in the southern part of the Pantanal. In Nobres, one can swim with an exuberant amount of colorful fish in crystal clear water.
Also, when you head out on one of these northern Pantanal Brazil tours you can extend your tour easily to go up even farther north into the Amazon to Alta Floresta, where one of the best Amazon lodges, the Cristalino Lodge, will introduce you to the wonders of the Amazon Rainforest.
And then your Pantanal Brazil tour will include everything that Brazil has to offer when it comes to animals: the flood plain of the Pantanal, the mountains of the Chapada dos Guimarães, snorkeling near Nobres, and the wildlife of the Amazon. Just your perfect trip to Brazil!
