Route 40, Los Antiguos and the Marble Caves - Patagonian Route 40 Tour

Route 40 south from Bariloche to El Chaltén, a tour extension

Bariloche and El Chaltén sit more than 1,000 km apart by road, and Route 40 is the road between them. This extension drives it south from Bariloche to Los Antiguos, makes two excursions from a three-night base at Hostería Los Antiguos, and carries on to El Chaltén on the last day.

Day 1 is the long one: El Bolsón and Esquel, where Welsh settlers arrived in the late 19th century; Los Alerces National Park; La Trochita, the old steam locomotive; and Cholila, a hideout of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Day 2 goes to the Tehuelche hand paintings of Cueva de las Manos, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Day 3 crosses into Chile for the Marble Caves.

This is a tour extension, meant to be added to a longer package. It is not available May through September.

Sample Itinerary

Large petrified logs rest on arid, rocky ground in the foreground, with Patagonia’s vast desert landscape and distant mountains under a blue sky—an inspiring scene near Puerto Deseado, perfect for nature lovers and bird watching enthusiasts.
Day 1

Route 40 south from Bariloche, in order. El Bolsón, then Esquel: two Andean towns with Welsh roots, from settlers who arrived in the late 19th century. Then Los Alerces National Park and its alerce forest, the Patagonian cypress. La Trochita, the old steam locomotive, is a visit, not a ride. Cholila follows, where Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid hid out. The day ends at Hostería Los Antiguos, on the lake beside the Chilean border. It is a long day on the road, so read the stops as the shape of the route, not a schedule.

Cave wall covered with stenciled outlines of human hands in various shades of red, brown, and white, overlapping and spread across the textured rock surface—an iconic sight on a Patagonian Route 40 tour.
Day 2

Cueva de las Manos is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The drive follows Route 40 through Caracoles Canyon to the Visitors' Center in the Pinturas River Canyon, and from there a footpath first made by the Tehuelche, who lived here more than 10,000 years ago, leads to the cave. Their rock paintings are still on the wall: animal symbols and many painted hands. A second walk along the Pinturas River Canyon is optional, and shows how slowly this landscape was cut. Then back to Hostería Los Antiguos.

Marble caves with smooth, swirling blue and white patterns rise above vibrant turquoise water on the Patagonian Route 40, reflecting the rock formations. Some greenery is visible in the background.
Day 3

Marble Cave, Marble Chapel, Marble Cathedral: three formations shaped by erosion, on the lake Argentina calls Buenos Aires and Chile calls General Carrera. It is one lake, and the caves sit on the Chilean side, so today crosses into Chile. The way there runs overland toward the Northern Patagonian Ice Field, then out on the lake by boat to the caves. The blues shift with the season and the weather, and Andean condors may be overhead. Back to Hostería Los Antiguos for the night.

A vibrant landscape along the Patagonian Route 40 features a twisted tree in the foreground, lush green bushes, and sharp, snow-capped mountain peaks under a clear blue sky. A dirt path winds through the greenery on this scenic Patagonian tour.
Day 4

Breakfast at the hostería, one last look at the lake, then Route 40 on south to El Chaltén, a village in the mountains. The tour ends there. From El Chaltén, travelers head home or carry on through Patagonia and the rest of South America, with this extension as one leg of a longer trip.
