Salta to Tucumán, by way of Jujuy - Wonders of Northern Argentina

Salta to Tucumán via Cafayate — a tour extension, seven days

First things first: this is a tour extension. It is built to sit on top of one of our full package tours rather than stand alone — seven days that hand you the northwest once you have seen the rest of the country.

The color comes early. Purmamarca sits under the Hill of Seven Colors, and the next day you are in Tilcara, known as the archaeological capital of northwestern Argentina, at the Pucará and the Archaeological Museum, then the old church at Uquía. After that, Cafayate: Torrontés, a vineyard, a night at a winery resort above the canyon. The Quilmes ruins turn up twice, once from Cafayate and again on the road out.

That road out is the point. This one does not loop back to Salta. It ends in Tucumán, which puts you at the head of the 22-hour sleeper train to Buenos Aires — slow, scenic, and worth it if trains are your thing. Book it well in advance. It is popular.

Highlights

  • Salta city tour and Cerro San Bernardo
  • Purmamarca beneath the Hill of Seven Colors
  • Tilcara: the Pucará and the Archaeological Museum
  • The church at Uquía and the streets of Humahuaca
  • Torrontés tasting and a night at a winery resort
  • The ruins of Quilmes, seen twice on the route
  • Tucumán city tour, then the optional sleeper train

Included

  • 7-Nights accommodations
  • All breakfasts
  • All tours, transfers, and entrance fees
  • English-speaking guides
  • Vineyard visit & stay in the winery resort

Sample Itinerary

Nighttime view of a historic colonial building in Argentina, with arched walkways and a wooden balcony, warmly lit with lamps. A crowd gathers outside under the deep blue sky—an authentic scene from the Land of Contrast.
Day 1

A guide meets you at Salta Airport and brings you to a hotel in the historical center. That is the day. On purpose. Everything after this one is scheduled, and the first evening is not, so use it: walk out into the neighborhood, find dinner, or sit still and let the rest of your trip catch up with you. Both are correct answers.

A historic colonial-style building with arched doorways and balconies, warmly lit at dusk, stands on a cobblestone plaza under a blue sky—capturing the essence of Northern Argentina and its architectural wonders.
Day 2

Salta in a morning. Cerro San Bernardo first, on the edge of town, because the view from up there explains the layout of everything below before you walk into it. Then the Cathedral, the Church of San Francisco, the Town Hall and the Historic Museum of the North — colonial Salta, in one go. Finish at the crafts market, where the silver is. The afternoon is yours, which is the right way around: see the city with a guide, then go back to whichever part of it you liked.

A narrow street lined with adobe-style buildings leads toward colorful, layered mountains under a blue sky. Cars parked along the road and trees add greenery—an inviting stop on any Coast to Coast Tour through this arid landscape.
Day 3

Today the drive is the point. Out of Salta through Quijano Field and White River, into the Gorge of El Toro near San Antonio de los Cobres, past the vast white salt flats, then over the Cuesta de Lipán and down the other side. Purmamarca is at the bottom, under the Hill of Seven Colors, and the rock does what the photographs promise — the bands really are that distinct, and they move with the light through the afternoon. Check in, swim, wander the village. You stay the night here.

Tall cacti in the foreground with green shrubs, set against arid hills and the colorful layered mountains of Northern Argentina under a cloudy sky—a landscape showcasing natural wonders.
Day 4

This is the archaeology day, and it goes further north than the shorter itineraries do. Leave Purmamarca for Tilcara, known as the archaeological capital of northwestern Argentina. You see the Pucará and then the Archaeological Museum, which is the correct order — the site first, then the things that came out of it. Afterward the church at Uquía, then Humahuaca. You end the day back in Salta. That sounds like backtracking. It is not: you drive the same valley twice at different hours, and it does not look the same twice.

A vineyard stretches across the dry landscape of Cafayate, with rows of grapevines and a wooden barrel in the foreground, set against distant mountains under a partly cloudy sky along Salta’s famous Wine Route.
Day 5

Cafayate and Quilmes are really one two-day excursion, and this is the first half of it. The drive in runs past rock formations that have earned their names — the Obelisk, the Key, the Devil's Throat — and then the wine country opens up. Cafayate is Torrontés country: a white that is nothing like the Malbec most people come to Argentina for. Take the vineyard tour, take the long lunch, do not rush the afternoon. You sleep at a winery resort looking out over the Cafayate Canyon and its granite hills — the one night where the hotel is part of the itinerary, not a place to put your bags.

A sunny day in Northern Argentina with a bright yellow cathedral featuring domes and arches, palm trees nearby, and an ornate historic building to the left; a person in blue stands by a fence, capturing the region's wonders.
Day 6

The longest driving day, and the one that changes the landscape under you. Leave the winery resort, stop again at the ruins of Quilmes and at Tafí, and cross the valley of Amaicha. From Quilmes the road climbs to the Calchaquí peaks at 3,042 meters, drops into the valley of Tafí for La Banda Church, then falls into the Gorge of Los Sosa, where the dry high country turns — quite suddenly — into yungas: wet, green, subtropical. Tucumán is at the far end of that road. The city tour covers the Cathedral, the Historical House of Culture, Independence Square and 9 de Julio Park.

Close-up view of the front section of a white airplane on an airport tarmac in Argentina, the Land of Contrast, showing its cockpit windows, nose, one engine, and landing gear.
Day 7

Transfer to Tucumán Airport and fly out — home, or onward into whatever the rest of your Argentina looks like. But there is a second option, and it is the reason this itinerary ends in Tucumán instead of turning around: the sleeper train to Buenos Aires. Twenty-two hours on rails, comfortable, and scenic in a way that flying is not. If that sounds like a good day rather than a lost one, take it — and book it well before you travel, because it is popular.
