Chile Lake District Tours

20+ Years Designing Chile Tours

Chile Lake District tours immerse travelers into a world of pristine nature and wildlife. The Chile Lake District starts in the cities of Puerto Varas, on the shores of Llanquihue Lake. Once a community of German immigrants, Puerto Varas is now a hub for travelers coming and going through the Chile Lake District to Bariloche on the other side of the Andes. The Chile lake crossing is one of the most scenic ways to cross the Andes between Chile and Argentina. Admire deep blue lakes, snow-capped volcanic peaks, waterfalls, and lush forests on a Chile Lake District tour.

Chile Lake District Tours

Six of our itineraries feature the Chile Lake District — from a 4-day Huilo-Huilo reserve escape (from $888 per person) to the classic Andes lake crossing into Argentina and longer journeys pairing Puerto Varas with wine country or Patagonia. Each one is a starting point our Travel Experts tailor to your pace.

Plan Your Chile Trip

Puerto Varas, Volcanoes & Waterfalls

Base yourself in Puerto Varas on the shores of Lake Llanquihue, where the perfect cone of Osorno Volcano fills the horizon. Days here move between the emerald rapids of the Petrohué Waterfalls, boat trips on Lake Todos los Santos, and the German-heritage lakefront towns of Frutillar and Puerto Octay — kuchen and lake views included. Further afield, the private Huilo-Huilo biological reserve adds canopy walks, waterfalls, and some of Chile’s most distinctive forest lodges.

Snow-capped volcano rises behind lush forest, rocky terrain, and a rushing river under a bright blue sky with scattered clouds.

Chile Lake Crossing to Argentina

The lake crossing is one of the most popular activities for those who visit the Patagonia Lake District. From Lake Llanquihue, the lake crossing is a full-day scenic tour that combines catamaran boats with comfortable buses to transport you over the border to Bariloche. Along the way, you’ll be able to admire volcanoes, waterfalls, rivers, mountains, and forests. Cross over Lake Todos los Santos, Lake Frias, and Lake Nahuel Huapi before arriving in the alpine town of Bariloche in Argentina.

Combining the Lake District with Chiloé & Patagonia

The Lake District pairs naturally with its neighbors. Ninety minutes from Puerto Varas, the island of Chiloé adds UNESCO-listed wooden churches, stilt-house villages, and penguin colonies — an easy 2–3 day extension. Heading south, the Carretera Austral and fjord routes lead toward Chilean Patagonia, while the lake crossing east lands you in Bariloche for the Argentine side. Most travelers give the region 3–5 days within a longer Chile tour.

Colorful wooden houses on stilts stand above grassy wetlands on Chiloe Island, with a hillside and more houses in the background under a cloudy sky.

Chile Lake District FAQs

December through March is summer — the most reliable weather for volcano views, boat trips, and the lake crossing. The shoulder months of October–November and April bring fewer travelers, spring blooms or autumn color, and better lodge rates. Winter is quiet and rainy at lake level but adds skiing on Osorno’s slopes.

Three to five days covers the essentials at a relaxed pace: Puerto Varas and Lake Llanquihue, the Petrohué Waterfalls, a Frutillar visit, and either the lake crossing toward Bariloche or a day on Chiloé. Add more time for Huilo-Huilo or the start of the Carretera Austral.

It is a full-day scenic journey — catamarans across Lake Todos los Santos, Lake Frías, and Lake Nahuel Huapi linked by short bus stretches — running between Puerto Varas in Chile and Bariloche in Argentina. Volcanoes, waterfalls, and forest the whole way. It operates year-round and is best done with luggage logistics arranged in advance, which we handle.

Yes — Chiloé Island is reachable via a short drive and ferry from Puerto Montt, making a long day trip possible. To see the UNESCO churches, palafito stilt houses, and Puñihuil penguin colony without rushing, we recommend 2–3 nights on the island as an extension.

Lake District itineraries start at $888 per person for a 4-day lodge-based program, with most complete journeys — typically pairing the region with Santiago, wine country, or Patagonia — running $2,000–$2,500 per person at 4-star level. Every quote is free, itemized, and tailored to your dates.
