Santiago de Chile is a dynamic city of contrasts, blending historic architecture with modern design and framed by the snow-capped Andes Mountains. On a Santiago city tour, explore landmarks such as the Metropolitan Cathedral, Plaza de Armas, La Moneda Presidential Palace, and the civic center, all set against one of South America’s most dramatic urban backdrops.
Santiago appears in 33 of our itineraries — as a 2–3 day city stay, the launch point for wine-valley and coastal day trips, or the gateway to the Atacama, Patagonia, and Easter Island. Every itinerary below is customizable, and most Chile tours begin right here.
Santiago serves as an ideal base for exploring central Chile. Popular day excursions include the coastal cities of Valparaíso and Viña del Mar, or tastings in the Casablanca and Maipo Valleys on a Chile wine tour. Valparaíso, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is known for its colorful hillside neighborhoods, historic funiculars, and ocean views, while nearby Viña del Mar offers relaxed beaches and seaside promenades. After a day of sightseeing, enjoy Santiago’s vibrant dining scene, from traditional Chilean cuisine to a classic pisco sour.
Give the city itself a full day or two: ride the funicular up Cerro San Cristóbal for the classic panorama over the city and the Andes, wander the cafés and galleries of Lastarria and Bellavista, browse Mercado Central’s seafood stalls, and finish with sunset views from the Sky Costanera tower — South America’s tallest. In winter (June–August), the Andes ski resorts sit barely 90 minutes from downtown; in summer, locals escape to the Cajón del Maipo canyon for riverside lunches and mountain scenery. Our guides shape each day around your interests, whether that’s food, history, art, or the mountains.
Nearly every Chile journey passes through Santiago, so we design it as more than a layover: 2–3 nights lets you see the city and add a Valparaíso or wine-valley day trip before flying north to the Atacama Desert, south to Patagonia, or west to Easter Island. Arriving on a long international flight? We usually schedule the city days first — Santiago’s pace is an easy way to land in South America.

Two to three days is the sweet spot: one for the city’s highlights — Plaza de Armas, La Moneda, Cerro San Cristóbal, Lastarria — and one or two for day trips to Valparaíso or the wine valleys. Santiago also works well split across a trip: city sights on arrival, a final night and dinner before your flight home.
The two classics are the UNESCO-listed port city of Valparaíso (with neighboring Viña del Mar’s beaches) and the wine valleys — Casablanca for cool-climate whites, Maipo for historic Cabernet estates. In winter, Andes ski resorts like Valle Nevado are about 90 minutes away; in summer, the Cajón del Maipo canyon offers mountain scenery and hot springs.
Worth real time. Beyond its role as Chile’s gateway, Santiago delivers a genuine capital-city experience: museums and galleries, a serious food scene, leafy neighborhoods framed by the Andes, and easy access to coast and wine country. Most of our travelers who give it two full days are glad they did.
Santiago works year-round. October–April brings warm, dry days ideal for rooftop terraces and day trips; June–August is ski season in the nearby Andes; and March–April adds the wine harvest in the surrounding valleys. The city sits in a mild Mediterranean climate, so no season is off-limits.
Itineraries that feature Santiago start around $600 per person for short 3-star programs, with a median around $2,400 across our 33 Santiago-touching journeys — most of which continue on to the Atacama, Patagonia, or wine country.
