“The Guianas” actually covers three separate territories — Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana — and each has its own entry rules. The table above reflects Guyana; here’s how all three compare.
Citizens of the US, UK, Canada, Australia and most EU countries do not need a visa for tourism and can stay up to 90 days. You’ll need a passport valid for at least six months and proof of onward travel.
Suriname is the exception: most visitors — including US, UK, Canadian and Australian citizens — do need an entry visa. The simplest option is the online e-Visa (around US$50), which you should arrange before you travel; don’t assume you can sort it out on arrival. Apply through Suriname’s official e-Visa portal and allow a few days for processing.
French Guiana is an overseas region of France, so it follows EU/Schengen entry rules: US, UK, Canadian and Australian visitors can enter visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. (The EU is phasing in a new pre-travel authorization called ETIAS for visa-exempt visitors — it’s worth checking whether it applies to your travel dates.)
Yellow fever is present across this region. A yellow fever vaccination certificate may be required if you are arriving from — or have recently transited — a country with yellow fever risk, and vaccination is recommended for travel here generally (ideally at least 10 days before you go).
We also recommend visiting the World Health Organization website for the most up-to-date, country-specific vaccination requirements.
Learn MoreEntry rules for all three territories can change. We recommend confirming the latest requirements with the relevant embassy or consulate — or an official source such as the IATA Travel Centre — before you book.
